Have you ever had Boston baked beans? They are a delicious type of baked beans coated in spices and molasses. The molasses is what makes them a unique Bostonian dish. But what’s the deal with Boston and molasses you may ask… Boston was a major rum producing city in colonial days. Sugar cane would be sent up there from the West Indies to be turned into molasses and then rum. Thus molasses was more than abundant in Boston. In fact, there was even a molasses flood that killed 21 people and injured over 100 in 1919. The flood was caused by an exploding molasses holding tank.

Of course you also need beans for a good baked bean dish. In this cake you will be using white beans which are also used in quite a few other bean recipes, including various bean soups. Both northern and navy beans work well in the Boston baked beans recipe. By the way, in case you were wondering, we’re talking about an actual baked bean dish, not the other famous Boston Baked Beans which are candy coated peanuts that look like baked beans.
