The last time I put up a wooden fence I made a terrible mistake; I didn’t protect the posts and within five years the posts started to split and looked terrible. If you have ever had to dig up fence posts and replace them then you know what a pain that kind of work is! Well, since then I have learned a very easy way to protect your fence posts and they are called post caps. Post caps simply sit on top of the post and keep moisture as well as pests from entering into the fiber of the post from the cut at the top. They are also easy to install and come in a lot of different styles and are made out of different materials.

One of my personal favorite kinds of caps is the copper post cap. They age really well and give you post a shinny feel in the beginning but once the elements start to turn the copper into that wonderful patina color you see on the old European buildings, they really start to look great! I have copper tops on my deck posts and the entire family loves them. I’m now sold on the value of protecting the posts on fences and decks and my wife is sold on the great look.
